A story from the Qur’an

Musa and the Sea

The sea ahead, an army behind, and no third way out — then the sea split, and each half stood like a mountain.

  1. Leaving by night

Musa (peace be upon him) led the Children of Israel out of Egypt by night, after long years of oppression. When Pharaoh learned of it he gathered his soldiers and set out after them.

  2. Nowhere to run

At dawn each group saw the other. The sea was in front of them and the army behind, and Musa’s companions said, “We are surely overtaken” — meaning: it is over, they have us.

  3. “My Lord is with me”

Musa answered with one calm sentence in the middle of the panic: “No — my Lord is with me; He will guide me.” He did not know how they would escape. He knew Who was with him.

  4. Strike the sea

God revealed to him: strike the sea with your staff. The water split apart, each part standing like a great mountain, and they walked across dry ground between two walls of water.

From the Qur’an

﴿قَالَ كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ

He said: “No! Indeed, my Lord is with me; He will guide me.”

Qur’an 26:62

So We revealed to Musa: “Strike the sea with your staff.” It split apart, and each portion was like a great mountain.

Qur’an 26:63

The lesson

When every door closes, God opens one you never imagined. Say what Musa said: my Lord is with me; He will guide me.
