A story from the Qur’an

Yunus and the Whale

Three layers of darkness — inside the whale, inside the sea, inside the night — and one prayer that cut through all of them.

Move your finger over the scene to turn it

  1. He left in anger

Yunus (peace be upon him) called his people and they did not respond, so he left them in anger before his Lord had given him leave, and boarded a ship out at sea.

  2. Out at sea

The ship was in trouble and overloaded; they drew lots among themselves, the lot fell on him, and he was cast into the sea.

  3. The darkness

The whale swallowed him, and he found himself inside darkness upon darkness upon darkness. There was nothing left he could do — except call on his Lord.

  4. The prayer

He called out from within the darkness: “There is no god but You. Glory be to You. I have indeed been among the wrongdoers.” God answered him and saved him from the distress — and that prayer was left behind for every person in difficulty after him.

From the Qur’an

And the man of the whale, when he went off in anger and thought We would not decree upon him — then he called out from within the darknesses: “There is no god but You. Glory be to You. I have indeed been among the wrongdoers.”

Qur’an 21:87

So We answered him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.

Qur’an 21:88

The lesson

There is no place too far from God. When life closes in, pray the prayer of Yunus — “and thus do We save the believers.”
