A story from the Qur’an

Ibrahim and the Fire

One young man against a whole people who worshipped idols — so they lit a fire for him, and God ordered it to turn cold.

Move your finger over the scene to turn it

  1. A simple question

Ibrahim (peace be upon him) saw his people bowing to statues they had carved themselves, and asked a question they could not answer: do you worship what you carve? Do you worship what can neither help you nor harm you?

  2. The broken idols

When the place was empty he broke every idol except the biggest, and left the axe beside it. When they returned and questioned him he said: ask them, if they can speak. They fell silent — because they knew stone does not talk.

  3. The fire

Having no argument left, they turned to force: “Burn him and support your gods.” They gathered wood, lit an enormous fire, and threw him into it.

  4. Cool and safe

Then God spoke two words to the fire that changed everything: be cool, and safe, for Ibrahim. He walked out untouched — and it was they who lost.

From the Qur’an

﴿قُلْنَا يَٰنَارُ كُونِى بَرْدًۭا وَسَلَٰمًا عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

We said: “O fire, be coolness and safety for Ibrahim.”

Qur’an 21:69

The lesson

Nothing harms you except by God’s permission. Fire itself does not burn if its Lord tells it not to.
