A story from the Qur’an

The Army of the Elephant

A whole army with an elephant came to destroy the Ka‘bah — and God turned it back with small birds.

Move your finger over the scene to turn it

  1. The army arrives

A great army came from the south with an enormous elephant, intending to destroy the Ka‘bah in Makkah. The people of Makkah had no force that could stand against it.

  2. The Lord of the House

The people of Makkah left the House to its Lord and went up into the hills to watch what would happen. The House has a Lord who protects it.

  3. Birds in flocks

God sent against them birds in flocks — wave after wave — pelting them with small stones of baked clay.

  4. Like chewed straw

God made them “like chewed straw” — like crop leaves eaten by animals, with nothing left. This happened in the very year the Prophet ﷺ was born.

From the Qur’an

﴿أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْفِيلِ

Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?

Qur’an 105:1

﴿وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ

And He sent against them birds in flocks,

Qur’an 105:3

﴿فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍۢ مَّأْكُولٍۭ

And He made them like chewed straw.

Qur’an 105:5

The lesson

The weakest creature is enough when God sends it. The huge elephant did not help them; the small birds were enough.
