The house of Allah

At the Mosque & on Friday

How to enter the mosque and what to do inside: the greeting prayer, straight rows, following the imam, the manners of Friday — and why children are welcome there.

The mosque is the house of Allah

The mosque is the place Allah loves most, His house on earth. You enter it clean, quiet, and well dressed — the way you enter the home of someone you love and respect.

The evidence

﴿وَأَنَّ ٱلْمَسَٰجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدًۭا﴾

And the mosques are for Allah, so do not call upon anyone alongside Allah.

Qur’an 72:18Read the original text

Note: “The places most beloved to Allah are its mosques” (Sahih Muslim 671).

For women

  • The mosque is for women as for men: “Do not prevent the female servants of Allah from the mosques of Allah” (Sahih al-Bukhari 900). A woman’s prayer at home is valid and full in reward, and Friday prayer is not obligatory for her.
  • Most mosques have a women’s prayer area with its own entrance — ask at the door.

If you are new to Islam

  • No one is watching you. Stand in the row and do what the person beside you does; if you get something wrong, nothing is lost.
  • After the prayer, greet the person next to you — you will find help from day one, and perhaps a teacher.
