The Opening

Al-Fatiha, Verse by Verse

The surah you recite in every rak‘ah — seven verses, each with its picture, pronunciation and meaning, so you understand what you are saying as you stand before Allah.

Why al-Fatiha?

It is the first surah in the mushaf, the greatest surah in it, and it is recited in every rak‘ah of every prayer — there is no prayer without it. Seven short verses you can memorise in days, and keep for life.

The evidence

«لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ»

There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book.

Sahih al-Bukhari 756Read the original text

Note: It is called “the Mother of the Book” and “the Seven Oft-Repeated”, because it is repeated in every rak‘ah: “We have given you seven of the oft-repeated, and the great Qur’an” (15:87).

How do I memorise it?

  • One verse a day: read it ten times looking, then ten times without.
  • Tie each verse to its picture in this lesson — the picture brings the words back.
  • Listen to a reciter and repeat after them — the platform’s تلاوة page highlights each word as it is read.
  • Until you have memorised it, the Prophet ﷺ taught a man to say in his prayer: subḥānallāh, al-ḥamdu lillāh, lā ilāha illallāh, Allāhu akbar, lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh — until he learned it. (Sunan Abi Dawud 832)

Letters to watch

  • The ḥ in “al-ḥamd” comes from the throat — it is not a plain h.
  • The ḍ in “aḍ-ḍāllīn” is unique to Arabic, and carries a long stretch (madd).
  • The ṣ in “ṣirāṭ” is heavy (emphatic) — a teacher corrects it in one sitting.
