The Shahada — the doorway

The Shahada is what brings a person into Islam. You say it with your tongue and affirm it in your heart. There is no ritual and no required place, and no one needs to be present — though saying it before two Muslim witnesses is better so it can be documented.

What you say

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

Pronunciation: Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu Allāh

Meaning: I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

The evidence

«بُنِيَ الإِسْلَامُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ: شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ، وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ، وَالْحَجِّ، وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ»

Islam is built upon five: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving zakat, the pilgrimage, and fasting Ramadan.

Note: If you have just embraced Islam: everything before it is wiped away. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Do you not know that Islam erases all that came before it?” You begin with a clean slate.

If you have just become Muslim

Islam erases what came before it — you start with a clean page and no burden. (Sahih Muslim 121)
Start with the prayer alone this week. Practice is built gradually, not all at once.
You do not need a new Arabic name, and you do not leave your family or culture behind — kindness to them is commanded.
Arabic comes with time. Start with the transliteration written here, and hold the meaning in your heart.
