When you wake up

The first word of your day is thanks: Allah brought you back to life after a sleep that resembles death. Say it as your eyes open — before you reach for the phone.

What you say

Pronunciation: Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aḥyānā ba‘da mā amātanā wa ilayhi n-nushūr

Meaning: All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

The evidence

When the Prophet ﷺ went to bed he would say, “In Your name I die and I live,” and when he rose he would say, “All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.”

Why dhikr?

  • “Remember Me and I will remember you.” (2:152)
  • “Truly, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (13:28)
  • Dhikr needs no wudu, no qiblah and no set time — it is the act of worship every minute has room for.

For parents

  • Adhkar are learned by repetition in place: say them aloud yourself at the door and at the table, and the child will echo them before you ask.
  • Print this lesson and hang each picture where it belongs — the sleep picture over the bed, the food picture near the table.
