When you wake up

The first word of your day is thanks: Allah brought you back to life after a sleep that resembles death. Say it as your eyes open — before you reach for the phone.

What you say

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Pronunciation: Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aḥyānā ba‘da mā amātanā wa ilayhi n-nushūr

Meaning: All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

The evidence

«كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ قَالَ: بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا، وَإِذَا قَامَ قَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ»

When the Prophet ﷺ went to bed he would say, “In Your name I die and I live,” and when he rose he would say, “All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.”

Why dhikr?

“Remember Me and I will remember you.” (2:152)
“Truly, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (13:28)
Dhikr needs no wudu, no qiblah and no set time — it is the act of worship every minute has room for.

For parents

Adhkar are learned by repetition in place: say them aloud yourself at the door and at the table, and the child will echo them before you ask.
